Direct TV genie DVR with Winegard?

Postby dianizon » Thu Dec 13, 2012 1:12 pm

Currently have HR 25 DVR and works great with Winegard as you have instructed how to hook up with TT. Thinking of upgrading to the new GENIE DVR and wondering if it would work with the Winegard GM 1518 that we have? According to Direct TV it won't work.

Anyone have any experience with this?

dianizon,

It should work with the addition of a SWM-840 kit. This is a SWM8 switch, so you would run two wires from the Carryout to the SWM8 switch, then a single wire from the SWM8 to a PI-28/29 power inserter and a single wire from the power inserter to the HR34.

I have a satellite dish that was installed last year, it was not an SWM unit. When the Direct TV guy came and installed the Genie and DVR in our home, he gave me an SWM unit for the antenna, the power inserter and a splitter for the dish on my RV. We changed out the antenna unit, installing the SWM one, connected it per the schematic he drew for me, installed the power inserter and then fired up the dish. It began searching but it would only locate the 101 satellite. I noticed the display on the little box identified the dish as an LG DTV Slimline. I believe it should say LG DTV SWM but I cannot change the type of antenna on the control box. It asks for a password, it comes up all zeros, as in 0000, but when I enter that, it says wrong pin. I need to know if this arrangement will work with what I have if I can change the antenna type on the box or do I need something else. It is Saturday afternoon and I will try and call Winegard on Monday if I haven't heard anything before that. My e-mail address is bob@bobnlindaking.com.
Thank you

For those who might come upon this thread later, you cannot simply change out LNB's and add a power inserter to make the SK-3005 SWM compatible and doing so could cause unnecessary damage.
All that is necessary to use the SK-3005 with DirecTV SWM hardware is to add the SWM8 hardware. This involves the SWM8 switch being mounted beside the Trav'ler base and connecting one of the existing coax runs to a power inserter. Now one single cable to each receiver will power all tuners in the box.
More information about setting up the Winegard products for DirecTV's SWM receivers can be found here:
http://www.winegard.com/kbase/upload/2452242.pdf

Additionally, the "new" Trav'ler for DirecTV has the SWM technology built-in and can be used with all of the DirecTV HD receivers without any additional hardware. A new product number replaces the SK-3005 with the SK-SWM3.
