Carry Out problems

I bought a Carry Out second hand last week from a seller who assured me it works but I'm not so sure now.

I have a Direct Tv HR24 receiver, have used several cables that are known good, have the dish on level ground with perfect overhead visibility and no electromagnetic obstacles in sight.

The dish comes on, spins, tilts, spins, tilts.... but never locks on to a satellite. The receiver is set to 3-lnb, multiswitch, and single tuner.

It finds signal on satellite 101 at transponder 2, 6, 8, 10, 14, 16, 22, 24, 30, and 32 all in the mid 80s to low 90s.

I had signal in this area and my neighbors currently have signal. What else can I check to verify the status of this dish? I've been calling tech support but their lines are always busy.

The fact that all of the transponders you list are even numbered indicate that you either have a bad LNB to you have a bad coax cable. There is also a slight possibility that the receiver is not outputting the proper voltages (needs to alternate between 13 and 18 volts DC).
I would look to the coax cable first as this is a pretty common issue. Assuming you have the tools you can put new ends on the existing cable or try using a different cable which is known to be working. You can check for a short in the cable as well with a meter.

Thanks for replying, Bill. I've seen several of your replies on the board and it seems you have a good knowledge of this product. Forgive my ignorance, but what is an LNB and how do I know if mine is bad?

I have a couple of coax cables, one of which is the Winegard cable that came with the dish. I'll do more experimenting tomorrow night. The Winegard cable was unused when I got it, and the other was part of the Direct TV installation and was working perfectly until I moved.

Is it normal for the dish to search continuously if it has a bad coax? If one were to plug the power supply to the dish, with no coax input, would it not find the satellite?

I'm really hoping I didn't throw a chunk of change down the toilet and am feeling pretty disgusted right now so I really appreciate your help.
