Local Stations for Buffalo New York Area

Postby lleombru » Sun Aug 05, 2012 7:35 pm

Hello there, recently I have purchased the Winegard poratable satellite but I am unable to get the Bufallo local stations through Directv. My programming package does include locals so I was wondering if this is a limitation of the satellite signals the antenna can recieve?

Thanks

Most likely the answer is yes. Your local Network programming would have to be broadcast on either 101 or 119 but most locals are not (most are being moved to 99 and 103). You can call DTV and ask for the great researchers here at Winegard should be able to tell you from which satellite they are broadcast.

If your locals are on the 99 satellite (which is what I think I found on the internet) then there is nothing DirecTV or anyone else can do to get you your locals unless you use an open face antenna. You will need either the Winegard Trav'ler on your roof or an open faced antenna on a tripod which you manually point and attempt to get the 3 satellites necessary for reception. An antenna setup with an SL3 or SL5 LNB would be necessary.

Louie,

Buffalo locals are spot-beamed from 119 for standard definition.

WGRZ NBC 2, WIVB CBS 4, WKBW ABC 7, WNED PBS 17, WNLO CW 23 and WUTV Fox 29 are all on satellite 119, coming from transponder 23.

Which portable are you working with?

That's great info. I guess I was looking at the HD version of the local networks. Where are you getting this info? Lyngsat or somewhere else? I would like to be able to look that up an easier way.
Thanks.

Hello Winegard Technical Help, thank you so much for your follow-up, in response to your question I am using the GM-1518 Carryout Portable Automatic Satellite Antenna. Do you think this model should be able to pick up the Buffalo area local stations?
If you conclude that it should be recieving these local stations what do you believe maybe the problem(s).

Looking forward to your response...

Thank you...

Winegard posted the you should be able to receive the Boston SD local networks on 119 but not the Boston HD networks which are broadcast on 99. What model DirecTV receiver are you using? Have you gone through the "Repeat Satellite Setup" routine, locked onto 101 and then completed the setup routine for an oval 3-LNB antenna?
Any additional information would be helpful. By the way, if you are using a DirecTV HD receiver you will have to go into the setup menu and under preferences be sure that you have the option selected that would allow you to view the SD programs (hide HD?) as this would not be an option by default.

Louie,

As long as you're in the spotbeam footprint and have it configured for 3LNB18x20 and the antenna power is on, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't get the Buffalo locals unless 119 happens to be obstructed.
