SK3005 with HR24-100 and H25-100

Postby hetrickb » Mon Apr 09, 2012 8:40 am

I've recently had a SK3005 installed on my Motorhome and have used my HDDVR (HR24-100) with the front HDTV. However, I've upgraded the bedroom TV to HD and took my HD Receiver (H25-100) with us on our last trip and couldn't get it to work. I've read through numerous posts and I'm a little confused about what I need to do to use the H25 with the SK3005. So, here's what I want to do. SK3005 on the roof, two leads to the front TV (works great), one to the bedroom and one to the outside. I want to use the H25 in the bedroom. What do I need to do so this receiver will work with the SK3005? Any problems having the two different type receivers connected to the system?

Thanks in advance,

The H25 receiver is the problem as this receiver will only work with a SWM setup and the Trav'ler is not SWM capable out of the box. There is a kit available that would allow you to setup the output to work with SWM and you could then use the SWM option with both receivers. You add the SWM switch on the roof by connecting all 4 of the Trav'ler outputs to the unit. You then use the existing wiring but add in a couple of splitters and a power injector.
Here is an example of what you would need to do:

The easiest solution is to replace the H25 with another receiver as only the 25 and 34 series receivers require the SWM option.

hetrickb,

Bill gave you the right information. Here is our SWM guide, you can see what is necessary for the SK-3005 on page 3: http://www.winegard.com/kbase/upload/2452242.pdf

As Bill stated, it may be easier to just get another receiver model that isn't a 25 or 34.

Thanks guys. After reviewing the diagrams, it looks like I would need to purchase (1) SWM8, (1) SWM Power Inserter and (2) 1-Way Splitters. I would then mount the SWM on the roof and feed all 4 lines out of the SK3005 into the SWM8. I would mount the Power Inserter inside the MH and use one of the 4 lines (that use to go from the SK3005 to the receivers) to feed power to the SWM8 and provide signal to the H25. Then use one of the other lines to feed signal from the SWM8 to a second splitter to support the HDDVR and outside TV. Looks fairly straight forward. However, my HDDVR requires two inputs so that I can watch one station while recording another. The diagram indicates that I should not connect the second cable. Do I loose the ability to use both tuners if only one cable is connected to the HDDVR?

hetrickb,

When using the SWM setup you only need to run one coax to each receiver, therefore even a dual tuner DVR would be fully functional with one coax running to it. SWM stands for single wire multiswitch and is what allows this to happen.

We sell a SWM kit that would contain everything you need to set the system up for that use. It is part number SWM-840 and sells for $169.99.

Just last week DirecTV came out and installed their latest Whole Home system in my motorhome. At the present time I'm using a standard fixed location Slimline 5LNB antenna on a tripod. The DirecTV tech replaced the 5LNB horn unit with the latest much smaller SWM LNB unit. Apparently it has the necessary SWM device built into it. I do not have a SWM8. Apparently the SWM8 technology is built into the LNB device on the feedhorn. The neat thing about this is only one RG6 coax cable from the antenna to the power unit.

The technician that installed my system said he has changed out the feedhorn (LNB) device on an SK3005 previously and with this new smaller SWM LNB and the Whole Home system worked fine. I don't have any proof of this other then his word. So I'm asking you guys and hopefully I'll get the straight scoop on whether this will work. It seems it should because the end of the feedhorn bracket on the SK3005 and the Fixed Slimline residential antenna appear to be the same.

I'd like very much to purchase the SK3005 provided it will do the job. If this new horn will work it would be so much easier to only have one antenna cable from the dish to the power unit in the basement.

While the information that he provided is incorrect you can still use the SK-3005 with a SWM setup. You can't just replace the LNB as the antenna will no longer be able to locate the satellites once you stow the unit and re-deploy.
The good news is that adding the SWM8 to the Trav'ler is a pretty simple process. You just add the SWM8 to the roof with the 4 outputs from the Trav'ler running to the 4 inputs on the SWM8. You then have the same single coax (plus the Trav'ler control cable) that enters the RV, goes to the power inserter and splitter just as your current setup.
You can see a diagram of the setup here:

Thanks Bill. So based on the diagram all I need is the SWM8. According to the above post Winegard has this in the SWM-840 Kit, but since I already have all the other components all I need is the SWM8. Maybe I can save a little money and purchase just the SWM8. Do you know where I can purchase the SWM8?

BobHDRV,

You will want to make sure the DirecTV power inserter you are working with already is either model PI-28 or PI-29 as indicated on the SWM installation manual.
