coupling two different antennas

Postby angell » Wed Mar 14, 2012 11:53 am

I want to couple one HD 8800 and a hd 9032 im buying a sd 3700 coupler and allready have an ap 8275 preamp its possible to orient each antenna in different direction, could someone explain the correct way to go and what to expect, wish is the expected gain of two different antenas oriented to dif direction?

thanks in advanced

im trying to improve reception in diferent directions, im actually recieving good signal 60 % of the time and i live 150 miles away from the near tower im figuring that some extra db could make a difference
the money is an issue so dont suggest an HD 8200 :)

Good morning angell,

Depending on the signal strength received by each antenna point in their proper direction and how much signal is received by each antenna from the side of the other signals you could have an issue. Example: if one antenna is pointing say north and the other antenna is pointing northeast at 50 degrees. You will receive a good signal from the north and some of the northeast signals coming in on the side of the north antenna but not necessarily good enough to watch. The same thing will happen with the antenna pointed to the northeast. You will receive a good signal from the northeast but that antenna will receive signals from the side from the north stations.

Now the issue is, when you combine the signal from each antenna in the SD-3700 coupler or any coupler you will have multiple signals of each channel. You will have the good signal from each antenna pointed in the proper direction and the not so good signal that is received off the side of the other antenna. This will create multipathing (in the old days ghosting) and if the good signal is not at least 2 to 3 times stronger than the weaker signal the TV tuner will not know which signal to lock onto and you will not receive that station.

Install the HD-8800 antenna at least 2 feet above or bellow the corner reflector of the HD-9032 antenna. The lead length from each antenna going to the SD-3700 do not need to be any certain length.
