Older sensar...replace with a sensar IV ?

Postby Oriderusa » Mon Oct 03, 2011 4:26 pm

I have a 1991 class C, with the original antenna. It does not have an amplifier. Can I put on a IV replacement head and have it work without any power supply or amplifier? Its probably a sensar 1 or 2.

The Sensar needs a 12V power supply inside the coach. If you have a Winegard then you should have a power supply in your coach. You can check the coax up on the roof to see if you are getting good 12+V power there. If not, you have found the problem and need to locate the issue. If you do have 12V power then you may need to replace the antenna.

OK some coaches have an amplifier that id past the coax and goes to the TV. So I can just replace my old sensar head with a IV and have better reception. There is nothing wrong with the one I have. I just thought the new IV would give me better reception.

You can certainly replace anything you want if you just want something new. However, if your current Sensar is working properly you will only find an improvement in reception due to the Wingman being a built in option vs. you just adding a wingman to your current antenna.

I'm new to forum and new to RV.
I am in the same dilema as the original post but maybe need some clarification.
I bought a used motorhome that has an old Winegard RV-3090 Sensar.
It has the hand crank and is directionally adjustable via the knob on inside roof, head antenna has built in amplifier and the light does come on when I turn it on at the panel.
But the signal is not very good, I have rabbit ears that work better from inside the coach.
My question is will the Sensar IV mount on the same mast?
I want to be able to use the same crank and everything and just want to be sure it will interchange with the existing hardware.
Any Help?

Before you replace the antenna you need to see if it should be working properly or whether you have another issue. You will need to go up on the roof with a digital voltage meter, remove the coax cable that enters into the side of the Batwing antenna and check that end of the coax to verify that you have 12+ volts showing in the coax. You will touch the red lead to the center conductor and hold the black to the collar. If you have low or no voltage then you will need to trace down whether you have a bad power supply (the box inside with the light) or a bad cable or cable connection between the 2.
