MP1 need a multi Switch?????

Postby ghutch » Sat Jan 28, 2012 1:09 pm

Just bought an MP1 and had some difficulty on the first setup. To be short, I had to install a multi switch between the dish and the receiver in order for the receiver to get a signal. I had the configuration set for "Round 18" and multi switch". There is no selection for NO Multi-switch. Is it normal to have to run the cable through a MS? I am using a DTV H20 receiver. I have given thought to a HRxx just to have record feature. Will the MS be needed in that case too?
Thanks for any help.

I am not sure what you are trying to do exactly. The first thing you want to do is run one single cable from the MP1 to your receiver with nothing in-between. Now go into the receiver setup menu, Satellite, Repeat Satellite setup and select 18" round and then multi-switch (don't install any kind of physical switch anywhere) and then go to the signal meter should should be set for satellite 101 and transponder 1. Point the MP1 until you have a good signal quality (80+) and then complete the setup routine by clicking Next or Continue to completion. This will get your receiver setup properly to receive the DirecTV standard def. programming (you cannot receive the high def with that antenna). Once you are pointed properly and the receiver setup properly you could either run a second coax from the MP1 to the receiver or if you are trying to use more than 1 DVR or more than 2 receivers you could add a multiplexer (not a switch) which would allow 2 inputs in from the MP1 and multiple outputs.

The reason for my post was I could not get a signal into the receiver. I worked for 2 hours then I got out my old reliable 18" oval on a tripod and got a signal in 5 minutes. I was running 1 cable fronm the MP1 to the H20 receiver, configured to "round and multiswitch". The only way I got a picture and descent signal strength was to run the cable thru a MS. Then I got a signal of 80 to 85. That was fine. I just prefer to not use a MS for simplicity. The way I first hooked up was as you discribed in your reply. I've been with DTV since 1996, and did all my own installs until a few years ago. I have another RV that I take a slimline 3 and connect to 2 HD receivers in that RV. So I think I know how to zero in on satellites. This MP1 will be used in a truck camper (which is more mobile) and I don't need HD. I'm hoping I can get the MP1 to work on a single wire setup. I was wondering if it was the H20 not being compatable with the dish.
Thanks

Not sure what you are doing wrong and why a multiswitch (what are you actually using here) would make it work but I am sure you are still doing something wrong.
You can get the MP1 to work with a SWM setting but it will still require that you run 2 cables from the MP1 to a SWM switch and then a single cable from their to a power injector and the cable from the injector to the splitter. Unless you want to run a bunch of receivers it might be easier to run 2 cables.

It is supposed to be 50 degrees here on Monday, I am going to try it again without the MS. I'll make a single wire run into the reciever, and a tuning meter on the second LNB port. Hope it goes better this time. I'll let you know.

No meters, no second runs. Just run one cable to the receiver, go through the setup routine in the receiver and THEN do a search with the MP1.

Hay Bill, I finally got it to work today. Single wire, 83 reading on 101, I'm happy.
