FM antenna - HD-6055P or HD-6000?

Postby Dave~1 » Wed May 13, 2009 3:08 pm

I need a dedicated FM antenna. It must be mounted in the attic and I don’t want to get a rotator.

All of my receivable stations are located in one direction, within a 40 degree arc from my location. Most of these stations are 25 to 35 miles away but one is almost 60 miles.

My two questions:

Is the HD-6055P FM antenna too directional for my situation, or will it work well for me?

Might the HD-6000 do just as well for me as the HD-6055P?

Thanks,
Dave

Good morning Dave~1 -

You loose over 50% of your signal strength by installing the antenna in a normal attic with ½’’ plywood sheeting and one layer of asphalt shingles. The HD-6055P antenna is your best choice since you will need all of the capture area of the large antenna to receive as much signal as you can.

Thank you for your response. – I’m assuming that your recommendation of the HD-6055P means that it is not too directional for my needs and will pick up all the stations within the 40 degree arc. If so, I’m ready buy!

Btw > very nice and informative write up concerning otaer’s “Selecting the Right Pre-amp” question.

Good morning Dave~1 -

That is correct. That antenna should work for your situation. Like any antenna issue their is a chance that it will not pick up channels on the outside of its beam width and that greatly depends on the terrain. However, that should work for you.

I have tried the smaller version (6000). It worked, but I suffered several drop-outs. All my HD stations are located 70 away. The 6055P antenna gave me the strength, and directivity to overcome my problems. Although it IS a deep fringe antenna, it is not extreemly long, and bulky like most deep fringe antennas. Don't mess around with small, cheap antennas. Buy this one!
