Signing up for Dish?

I bought a Carryout and called Dish about signing up. I am currently a Directv customer but since Dish is available in hd with the carryout and I am about to discontinue my home service, since I am renting my house and hitting the road for a year, I thought I'd go with Dish. They said I had to go to a Dish retail office and have the equipment installed. Is there a way I can just buy the Dish 211 receiver and start service myself? There is not a dish retail office withing 100 mile of me.
