coax Short on VS-0503/5312

Postby rs3turbo » Wed Aug 31, 2011 5:45 am

Hi,

I have the 5312 entertainment select unit, and have recently blown the motherboard on an AVTEX 12V leisure television 3 times. Avtex will no longer repair the television under warranty and point the cause to a short in the coax cable going into the television. I have traced the coax short to the 5312 unit.

If I use a continuity tester and probe the middle of each input on the back of the 5312 against the outside of each input, I get the following results, all cables going into the 5312 have been disconnected, including the power:-

To Main TV - Continuity exists
From Main Ant - No Continuity
To VCR - Continuity exists
from VCR - Continuity exists
From Cable TV - Continuity exists
To TV2 - Continuity exists
From Sat - Continuity exists
From Aux - Continuity exists

With all the cables connected including the power I get a strong 12v signal through the coax to the roof antenna.

Can you advise me if the 5312 is faulty based on the continuity checks, the fitting instructions are clear that all cables made and connected to the 5312 should not be shorted out. all cables when unconnected from the 5312 and tested show no continuity so are not shorting out.

your assistance would be much appreciated.

If the unit is faulty what unit would you recommend to replace it.

Good Morning,

It sounds like you may have a ground Loop within your coach. Your best bet is to hire an electrician to track down the Ground Loop. Your problem may not be coming from the VS box itself, it may be coming from anywhere within your coach. Sorry, I could not be further assistance.

Hi thanks for replying, I'll have the coach looked at.

Could you just confirm that with the VS-0503/5312 out of the coach and on my kitchen bench, no power connected and no coax cables ocnnected, should there be any continuity between the coax inputs/outputs at the back of the unit when testing between inner and outer points of each individual input/output

Many Thanks

The only place you will have power is out of the coax connection from the antenna, should be reading 12 volts when you turn the power button on the front of the VS box.
