SK-3005 to SK-1000 conversion

Postby okvist » Thu Feb 03, 2011 11:03 pm

I have a Trave'ler DirecTV Slimline antenna SK-3005 mounted on my Class A RV. I have owned it since 2008 and it has worked very well for the 16 months of RVing since then. Now that we are not using the RV for this winter DirecTV is giving me crap about suspending my account for such a long period. :x
I would like to find out what my options are to convert my antenna for Dish network use.
It appears that there is a conversion kit (TRAV’LER TM DISH 1000 CONVERSION KIT Model SKA-KT1) to do this conversion. So far in my internet search tonight I have not found a price for this kit.
Am I correct about this kit's function? What is the price range?

I am a Winegard ambassador so I have posted this similar question in that forum also.

Good Morning Jim,

Yes, there is a conversion kit for the Travl'er satellite. You need to call into the Customer service line at 1-800-288-8094 for the pricing.

There's another alternative. I'll trade you my 1 year old sk-1000 unit for your 3005. They use the same bases so it's a simple swap. Since the 3005 costs more than the 1000, I'll kick in a couple hundred bucks. I have all paperwork, documentation, extended warranty. Let me know if you have an interest.

Skypoke,
Thanks for the offer. I will have to decline it.
The reason I was looking for the conversion is because DirecTV was not willing to suspend my service for more than 6 months or multiple times in a row. I only use DirecTV when in my RV (I can not get reception at my house). Thus I was not willing to pay for service when I was not using the RV. Dish network has a new pay as you go plan.
After battling with DirecTV over this issue I received a reprieve that allows me to stay a customer. Since I have been a DirecTV customer for many years I am more comfortable staying with them. This is not a knock on Dish network. Their new pay as you go option seems perfect. I wish that DirecTV would offer a similar plan.

Thanks again for the offer.

Jim,

Dish was giving me a line of bull about deactivating my RV receiver as well. However, as I own my receiver outright, I can deactivate it or reactivate anytime I so choose. They don't come right out and say this to you but if you ask specifically, you will get this answer. I only turn mine on/activate whenever I am going out on the road. Pay-as-you go will cost you a little more than just turning it on when you need it :D

Good luck.
