Change in signal strength?

Postby rognang » Sun Apr 10, 2011 8:16 am

We have an attic mounted antenna split to three TV's that until about a week ago was working fine. We had occasional issues with the signal during bad weather, etc. but for the most part was working fine. We live in Bloomington, 50 miles from Indy. A few days ago we sat down to watch TV and the only station that came in was the Bloomington PBS station. None of the Indy stations came in. No weather issues. Then, the next morning everything came in just fine. This cycle has continued for several days, with the times that is working/not working being random. The only thing we can figure is a large appliance kicking on/off that might be interfering--is this possible? and why did it just start this week? Any suggestions?

Good morning rognang,

Not knowing exactly what type/model number your antenna is and if you have an amplifier in your system this is a hard question to answer. Can you give us the model number of your antenna (or a picture of it) and the model number of any preamplifiers or distribution amplifiers you have in your system.

Try by passing your splitter and go directly from your antenna to one TV set to see what happens, you will have a stronger signal going to the TV because we have eliminated the splitter loss. If you now have a god strong signal add only the splitter and no other TV sets or their coax cable lines. Now if you still have a good signal to the first TV set with the splitter added and no other TV sets and their cables attached to the splitter start adding one cable and TV set at a time to see what happens. It is possible that one of your TV sets could be radiating a bad signal out of its antenna connection and sending it back to the splitter via the coax cable and cancelling the good signal coming into the splitter.
