Is TV reception possible in a canyon?

Postby malibumarlin » Mon Oct 04, 2010 6:41 pm

I live in a canyon, and i am wondering if a home antenna system will work.

My line of site to the actual broadcasting towers is obstructed by the low foothills of my local canyon which lay between my locale and the main mountain peak, Mt. Wilson, where all of Los Angeles' broadcast towers are located.

I am 40 miles from Mt. Wilson. If you use google earth, you can see my situation clearly. I am in Las Virgenes Canyon: 4200 Las Virgenes Road, Calabasas, CA 91302. FCC pegs my signal strength for H-VHF signal at weak to no signal. If i did mount an antenna, it would be on the rooftop of my 2-story building, but kept low key so as to not disrupt my HOA.

Will a home antenna still be able to pull in a signal for me, or am i doomed to pay for direct tv just to watch the lakers kick NBA bootie this season?

Which antenna and any other hardware like a pre-amp would you recommend? Thank you.

In order to determine if there is a possibility for you to receive a signal from the LA channels we suggest trying a test antenna and cable to a digital TV set or digital converter box. To start with you would use an HD700R antenna mounted on a 5-10 foot piece of 11/4” PVC duct taped to a step ladder to hold it on your roof while doing this test. From the antenna use a 75’ piece of RG6/U coax cable going directly to one of your TV sets and check to see if you can receive any of the LA TV channels.

Let us know which channels and if possible what their signal levels are and from that information we should be able to determine if a large antenna and preamplifier will bring in a strong enough signal for you or if you will need to go to a satellite provider.
