Tuner Failed

Postby papa » Mon Feb 23, 2009 1:16 am

When I use my satellite dish in my motor home I cannot receive a signal. When I run a system check it tells me that 101 and 119 are ok but tuner failed. When I check signal strength I am in the 90's. Worked great last night just started to fail tonight. I have a round dish but put dish setting on oval 2lnb as I always have. I have the older style winegaurd with gps so I have to push the button to go between satellites. When I hook the reciever up in my house it works fine. Thanks

It sounds like you have our RM-9946. The one with a LCD and about 9 bottoms on a white plate.

When the RM-9946 quits searching, what does it say on the display?

Also, can you tell me what the receiver model is?

Did papa get an answer to this question. My father in law is having the exact same problem. He recently switched from Dish to Directv and could not get it to work. I opened the dome and set the switches accordingly. I powered up the system and get the same problem that papa describes. I am using the directv D12 reciever. If this was answered in another forum I missed, I apologize but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Does your satellite dish stop moving or start sounding like a washing machine after it searches?

If so, the problem is most likely in the receiver. I would recommend talking to DIRCTV and seeing if they can troubleshoot the receiver.

When you talk to them, you will need to be careful NOT to tell them you are using their receiver in an RV.

Once they learn you are in an RV, they tend to start trying to transfer you to Winegard.

The satelite dish continues searching (not the washing machine sound although it did do that once). It will stop like it found a satelite then about 20 seconds later will start moving again, stop for a bit then move again. It will do this for about 5 minutes then it just stops all together. On the signal meter I'm showing high 80's and low 90's on each Satelite as its doing these searchs. It does not stay on those numbers long because like I said the dish starts moving agian. It really seems like the dish is finding the Satelite but it will not stay on it. On calling directv, the reciever works fine in the house so what would I tell them to trouble shoot. Could this be an equipment issue?

Could this be caused by the Satellite 77 issue. It sounds very similar.

I took it to an authorized winegard service center and they determined it was a combination of two items. The up and down motor on the dish and the control board. Both are still under warranty and they are in the process of repairing it now. The tech did tell me this is a very common model (MV3500a) and this is a common issue with this dish (MV3500a). He said winegard has since upgraded/changed their parts in the new models. Thanks all
