Selecting antenna (preferably mount with dish)

Hi I live in roichester Ny 14624and would like to get an antenna that I could preferably mount right to the mast of my dish. i already have 2 dishes on the roof and don't need any more stuff up there. All my stations (that I care for) are in the yellow category and are less than 10 miles from me. 2 of them that are vhf (channels 13 and 10) are giving me problems sometimes. I do have many tall trees around me. I am using a flat rca amplified indoor that works great now except for those 2 channels. Most of the time I have to move it around to get them. I would like something as small and compact as possible. Thanks

Hi Chrisc,

I would not recommend attaching a antenna to your dish antenna.

The Dish has to have a precise aim to achieve it's signal.

Your UHF antenna would only rock the dish and make you loose your pay per view signal

One other issue you would have is that the foot print of the Dish mount is not strong enough to support the weight of the Dish antenna and the television antenna, Sooner or later it would either bend or break. Either way - it isn't something that you want to happen.

You already explained your situation and I guess you know your answer. UHF signals are line of sight. Anything between you and the signal is going to cause problems that just putting up a small antenna isn't going to fix.

Trees, buildings more than 4 stories, hills, a airport between you and the transmitter will all cause drop outs and lost signals.

VHF signals for the most part are all low power and harder to get since the DTV transition.

You have a lot of signals that you could receive with a good antenna 24 feet above ground level - if there is nothing between you and the signal.

About the only antenna that fit's your needs would be the Winegard HD7010.

There is no guarantee's that it will perform as well as is claimed due to the fact that we do not have a physical address for you, but I will say that it will work better than the best indoor antenna.

Unfortunately - you have television transmitter in all directions from the area in which you live and the only way that a outdoors antenna is going to perform it's best is if you add a antenna rotor.

UHF is line of sight and there is no one good place to point your antenna to receive all the signals.

Buy RG 6 Quad Shield wire and use a ground on the antenna and the antenna wire - outside of the house.

Keep your splitters to a minimum and try to use only two way splitters if possible and keep the wire runs as shot as possible..

10 and 18 watts is not a lot of signal, even if you are only 8 miles away from the transmitter.

Keep your antenna as high above the roof as possible and away from the main roof for the signals you wish to get best. The roof might reflect your signals away from your antenna, but the grass below your roof might reflect your signal towards the antenna when there is dew or moisture on the grass.

Bare ground will absorb the signal.

Getting your antenna above the trees will be the key to receiving those stations.
