Pass Thru basically that when the converter is turned off, it will allow the signal to go through it un-altered.
When the converter boxes first came out, the majority were not pass thru units. Meaning that if you ran something other than antenna signal to be converted through them it would fail.
If you have your converter manual, read it to see if you have a pass thru system. If not, you can test it pretty easily.
Connect a VCR (or cable line or your DIRECTV receiver) to the TV and make sure you are getting a picture.
Once you have a picture, disconnect the coax that runs from the VCR to the TV from the television and connect it to the ANTENNA IN on your converter.
Run a new coax cable from the converter to the TV.
Make sure the converter is unplugged or off and see if you get a picture.
No picture means that your converter does not have the Pass Thru feature.
If this is the case, you can correct this with some fancy wiring. Just let me know and I will re-post the link to some diagrams that will help.
