VS5312/Converter Box

Postby trek04 » Thu Sep 24, 2009 9:39 pm

I wish to view my RV TV using either directv or my antenna. I have a VS5312 and a Radio Shack digital converter box. I connected the antenna cable to the converter box ant. in and the to TV to the the ant. in on the VS5312. I get a "weak signal" message. I have 12vdc power to the VS5312. Are my connections wrong?

After rechecking my connections and adjusting the antenna I now have aquired all of the local channels except one.
The picture quality is not as good as it was in analog before the switch to digital. Does that mean I would have to upgrade 04 RV antenna for better reception?

I took the VS5312 out of the loop and only got one station, Ch 6 in Portland, OR. My zip is 97317, Salem, OR. The channel strength for the stations I received with the VS5312 was around 39% acording to the converter box. That is why asked if I need an antenna upgrade.

Everything Antenna Vision is saying looks correct to me. I would definiately add on the Winegard Wingman, it can make a huge difference and is a very cheap addition, installs in seconds. This will help your signal on UHF channels.

The signal at your television should be crystal clear. It is possible you are still picking up some analog stations, otherwise it is some piece of equipment on your end degrading the signal. Digital signal is either 100% there, or 100% not. No snow/fuzz like the analog signal.

Which station are you still having problems receiving?

I will add the Wingman next week when I take the RV in for service, since I do not have a ladder tall enough and will let you know.

I, installed the Wingman and the signal level went from 39 to 63, but the picture was poor, snowy. Today I replaced the radio shack converter with a Tivax STB-T8. The picture was great! It said the signal was "normal", between poor & good, but I am happy. This is a backup if I can not get Satellite reception when RVing . I got channels 6,8, 10, and 12 and some others I don't watch, but not 2(ABC). At this location on the east side of Salem, the elevation is 200 ft. +,- plus about 15 ft. for the antenna. I suspect this is why the signal is not in the "good" range. In any case I would not watch TV in the RV at home unless there was an extended power outage. Atleast now I know the equipment all works.
Thanks for everyones help,
John

Thanks for coming back and sharing your experience trek04. I'm glad you got everything working!

There are some Wingman doubters out there that are just skeptical about sales gimmicks, but it obviously does make a difference.
