MS2002 above metal roof

Postby dsttexas » Sat Jul 30, 2011 11:31 am

I helped a neighbor install his MS2002 omnidirectional. It is just above the roof line on a metal roofed house with multiple roof angles. See the attached picture.

When laying it upside down on the porch and testing our connections, we got all three local channels (5-7 miles) plus a number of others 20-30 miles away. On this roof, it gets maybe 2 of the 3 locals, and not completely consistently.

This is obviously an example of how NOT to install this antenna!

Is there any justification for attempting an installation on the side of the building, below the roof lines? Given the initial test, it might work a whole lot better just mounted to the porch railing!! Or is there any antenna that would work good given that roof?

GPS coordinates are: lat 43* 53.892'N lon 70* 45.256'W. Zip code 04029. Two channels (6, 8) are about SE direction, one (13) is about NE. The front / porch in the picture faces SSW so towers for 6 and 8 would be through some trees to the right, and tower for 13 would be through the house to the back and a bit of a hill.

Thank you!

Good morning dsttexas,

According to www.tvfool.com the MS-2002 antenna should give you good results if installed properly. TV antennas whether it is the MS-2002 or another style needs to be at least 8-10 feet above (higher) than a metal roof to prevent the TV signals from reflecting off the metal roof into the antennas field of reception (view). Otherwise we can get multipathing of the signals and the TV tuner or converter box tuner will not know which of the signals to lock onto. The 1Edge and 2 Edge signals are coming to you via ground or atmospheric bounce and may not be as reliable as the LOS (line of sight) channels.

Try the MS-2002 I a number of different locations approximately 30 feet if possible until you find the location that will give you the best performance. Also try rotating the MS-2002 antenna, even though it is omni directional it’s receiving pattern is not a prefect 360 degree pattern on all channels so some rotating of the antenna at installation may be required.
