Opinion...mount it high in the attic or low outside?

Postby blackjackmark » Tue Oct 19, 2010 6:50 pm

I just moved into a subdivision that does not allow external OTA antennas. So my plan was to mount mine (round Winegard MS-2000 amplified omnidirectional) in the attic. Now that I see my attic, it's a real pain to work in it since it has the blown-in cellulose insulation, and I'd rather not disturb it.

So I was thinking about trying to be sneaky with the homeowner's association and just mount it right next to my DISH...considering it's circular and "dish-like", I figure I can claim it's a "dish" antenna.

If I do that, the antenna would only be about 10 feet off the ground. If I mount in the attic, it would probably be a good 25 feet off the ground, but indoors.

Which do you believe would be better?

Good morning Blackjackmark -

First off, your subdivision cannot prohibit the installation and use of an over-the-air antenna. Please refer to Section 207 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html

In terms of your other questions if you decide to mount lower or in your attic as to not shake the boat... it would depend on a few factors. If you mount the antenna in your attic you can easily lose 50-90% of the signal depending on the materials in your roof. Mounting an antenna lower to the ground can cause the same issues if there are obstructions between the antenna and the tower.

So if you are mounting low and there is a tree or building between the antenna and the signal, the attic could be a good choice. If you have a fairly clear view from the antenna location outside, that could be a better option.
