Using a splitter on cable from outside wingbat antenna

Postby lbethane » Fri Oct 16, 2009 5:54 pm

I have a Winegard batwing antenna on my motorhome that is connected to my TV. I am able to do a scan for OTA local stations using my Tv's menu.

I am wondering if I can put a splitter on this cable so that I can also connect the antenna to my Dishnetwork receiver. This receiver does have a connection for OTA programs and will also scan for the locals.

I would like to have the flexibility to use the Dishnetwork receiver for OTA locals when my Trav'ler satellite is up and to use the TV to scan for locals when I am not using the satellite.

Is that possible?

the dishnetwork receiver is the 612, HD receiver.

I do not know the model of the batwing antenna. it is the one that came with the Fleetwood motorhome.

the tv has all of the other inputs that you mentioned.

right now the cable from the antenna is connected to the tv. And I do get ota channels on the tv.

I would like to get them on the dish receiver also.

thanks,
linda

Just a followup on this question:
Since I know the TV would scan successfully for the OTA channels when the outside antenna is connected to it, I decided to disconnect the cable to the TV and connect it to the Dishnetwork 612 receiver. I then scanned for the OTA channels using the Dish receiver. That too worked very well. And I had the channels on the Dish Guide.

I would like to test using a splitter to connect the outside antenna to both the TV and the Dish receiver. But I do not want to damage anything by doing this. First off, will I damage anything by doing this? Second, will I then be able to scan using either the TV or the Dish 612 receiver?

Thanks,
Linda

You can install a splitter AFTER the power supply for your Sensar antenna without causing any problems. Installing it before won't damage anything but you are likely to lose your signal.

I am not sure as to what you mean by "power supply." My cable from the batwing antenna goes directly into the TV. Where would the power supply be? Obviously, I do not want to loose my signal.
Thanks,
Linda

Do you have one continuous cable that runs directly from the bottom side of the antenna directly to the back of the TV or is there a wall plate or video switch somewhere in the system?

The video switch or the wall plate is the power supply.

There is no video switch or wall plate. The cable does run directly from the antenna to the Tv. So does that mean there is no power source and I can install a splitter on the cable before it attaches to the TV? Then I can end on part to the TV and one to the Satellite receiver. Is that right?

You must have a non-amplified antenna. If this is the case, you can split the signal at any point.
