Winegard Carryout/Direct HD24 Receiver

Postby Kresie09 » Mon May 28, 2012 2:07 pm

Hi, I read some place on the forum that I could use the Direct HD 24 DVR receiver with my new Carryout (which you shouldn't buy on a holiday week-end!). We have followed all directions and cannot get channels below 70 no matter what our settings. The upper channels come in just fine.
How do we try to get the other satillite? We are not getting all the channels we subscribe to, and we are not getting local channels at all, and we are within the 200 mile radius to receive them.
I don't use the DVR component in the fifth wheel.
Thank you.

The Carryout can only pick up the 101 and 119 satellites. It's quite likely that your local Network programming is broadcast on the 99 and/or 103 satellites and there is no domed antenna that can receive the programming from these satellites. This is also where the HD programming is located.

Thank you for your reply. After looking around today, I believe you are probably right, but when we bought the Carryout, the business owner who sold it to us showed us how to set up, and he promptly got the local channels.

I would take the unit back to the person who was able to do this and I would verify that he was able to pick up those locals via satellite and not by using the OTA option.
Where are you located? We should be able to look up where the locals come from.

I checked with the guy we bought the Carryout from, and he uses a standard receiver and gets local channels. Winegard tech told me it was because his receiver was programed in the town where the local channels are located.
Is it possible to reprogram Carryout to get satillite 99?

No. The 99 and 103 satellites broadcast their signals on the KA band frequency. All domes have only one LNB and this is a KU band LNB (the 101 satellite broadcasts on the KU band).
There are a few markets left around the US where the local Network programming is broadcast on the 119 satellite and the Carryout can be programmed to switch between 101 and 119 but nothing can be done about the technology difference with 99 and 103.
In case you are not aware, the local Network programming is spot beamed so if your receiver was originally setup to get local Network programming from (let say) Orlando, FL, there is nothing anyone can do to get you Orlando, FL when you are in TX or VA or OK.

Kresie09,

Make sure you are on the 02: 3LNB 18x20 setting for the Dish Type in the receiver. This will configure the receiver to use both satellites 101 and 119, which should give you all SD programming if available.

Spot beams aren't perfectly shaped so at 200 miles you may be outside of the spot beam.

Verify you are on the correct dish type setting, and try test channels 9513 and 9514 (odd and even transponders for satellite 119). If you get both of the test channels and are still missing locals, you are either outside of the spotbeam or linked to locals from a different area.

Not all local networks are available on the 101 or 119 satellites. If your locals are broadcast on 99 or 103 you will not be able to receive this programming with any kind of a domed antenna.
