Not picking up all Indianapolis stations

Postby tenkan » Mon Nov 15, 2010 8:06 pm

Recently I purchased the Winegard antenna 7697P and installed it 60 miles north from Indianapolis. The three Indy stations channel 13 come in with signal strength 80%. However the Indy channel 6 and 20 are no where to be found. All these stations using plenty of broadcasting power as you know. Any suggestions?

Good morning Tenkan,

There are several factors that could be coming into play in this situation. I have a few questions for you before we can accurately find the issue.

Where is the antenna mounted? Inside, outside, height, etc.

How long is your coax run? How many televisions are you splitting the signal to?

Do you have an amplifier in the line?

Are there any obstructions between you and the signal? Tree line? Buildings?

If possible please give me a little more information. Private messaging me your addresss will also help.

Thanks.

In reply to your questions, the antenna is outdoors, 30 feet high, feeds one TV. There is no amplifier in the line. The tops of the trees across the Wabash River are about 10 to 15 feet higher. Is this antenna not mostly designed for VHF? The Indianapolis station channel 13 is VHF, however the Indianapolis channel 6 is an UHF station, broadcasting with 536-542MHZ. Appreciate your reply. tenkan

Good morning tenkan,

The HD7697P is a High VHF and UHF antenna. The way you have it mounted seems fine at first glance and without a long cable run you should not need an amplifier, though at that distance it may help if you are experiencing some signal loss.

Are you receiving any UHF channels at this time? If not, please review our phasing lines video to test if that is the issue.

If that is not the issue, I would recommend calling technical service at 800-788-4417 and asking for Hans Rabong. He can help you further with more detailed information.

In your tutorial you mention to have some one check the UHF as well as the VHF durung the phase test. Our Samsung LCD television uses the auto program to select TV channels. How do we know which channels are UHF or VHF? Also in your tutorial it seems you have the antenna on a table. We can lower the antenna rather easily, but we do not expect to receive many channels so close to ground level. Are we still missing something?

Good morning Tenkan,

In the video you are checking voltage on the phasing lines, not signal. The height of the antenna does not matter, you just need access to the phasing lines to perform this test just as described in the video.

Channels 2-13 are broadcast on VHF while channels 14 - 51 are on UHF. However, channels can be actually broadcast on one channel and "virtually" have a different channel. To check the actual channels you are viewing please refer to www.antennaweb.org and type in your zip code. The RF channel listing will show the actual channel number that the station is being broadcast on.
